Fiber on the (Fore)Front of Packages

According to recent data from UCSF, Americans are averaging a daily intake of 15g of fiber, though the recommendation is between 25-30 grams. While this nutrient has many benefits, including contributing to fullness, promoting healthy gastrointestinal function, and reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, it’s not nearly as sexy as protein, which has strong associations with fit and frequent gym goers. Many familiar foods contain decent amounts of fiber – pulses (lima beans, lentils, etc), Brussels sprouts, avocados, pears, oats, chia and cauliflower, but consumers are not often gravitating towards these and other ingredients for the fiber. The good news is, that with all the positive publicity that probiotics have received in the past few years for their contribution to a healthy gut, there might be similar positive associations with prebiotics which, as you may have guessed, are a type of fiber. They’re indigestible and help feed probiotics, leading to a more efficient and ultimately healthier gut.

Here are a few beverages, in a variety of beverage flavors, currently on the market making a fiber claim on the front of their package:
