Flavor Drop: Piña Colada & Ginger Beer

The Trend: Nostalgia

The Flavor: Piña Colada

Though Piña Colada evokes relaxing beachfront bars and tropical breezes, for some, their first encounter was with candy, recalling childhood memories of Piña Colada Dum-Dums lollipops or Piña Colada Taffy Town Saltwater Taffy. Piña Colada is found in hard candy, chews, cotton candy, ice pops, ice cream, sparkling water, soda, no/low alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, and even coffee. This year, Oddly Good launched a limited-edition Dreamy Piña Colada plant-based dessert and Coca-Cola introduced Minute Maid Spiked Piña Colada Wine Cocktail. In 2023, BuzzBallz released Lotta Colada Cocktails and Piña Colada Chillers in a new formula that uses real cream. Over the last year, Piña Colada has grown in social conversations by over 27.9%.When searching Piña Colada, people also search for Piña Colada smoothie which has increased 22.2% over the last year.2

The Flavor: Ginger Beer

Ginger Beer has long been popular due to its sweet, spicy profile and perceived health benefits. For over a century, there have been sugary non-alcoholic Ginger Beer products available for adults and kids alike. Today, for those consumers looking to limit their sugar intake, there are no/low sugar options available in non-alcoholic and alcoholic applications as seen in the 2022 release of Better Beer Ginger Beer with 4.0% alcohol, which is said to have 50% less sugar than typical Ginger Beer beverages. In social conversations, Ginger Beer has grown by more than 30.9% over the last year.1 Meanwhile, when searching Ginger Beer, people also search for Ginger Beer mocktail which has increased over the last year by 51.7%.2
