The Wellness Wagon

Consumers are prioritizing mental and physical health in wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. As a result, demand for beverages that enhance immunity, stress relief, and sleep are expected to grow significantly. Here are some recent innovations in wellness beverages for the body and mind.

Immune Boosters

Consumers are prioritizing health above all else right now. According to Datassential, building immunity is more important to U.S. consumers than it was a few months ago and 35% believe a healthier lifestyle is more important now than before the pandemic began. Consequently, immune-boosting products and ingredients are flying off shelves. Common ingredients in these products include vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, turmeric, ginger, and probiotics.

Euromonitor reports that U.S. sales of products rich in vitamin C have grown more than 20% online since March. Additionally, orange juice, a well-known source of vitamin C, experienced 38% growth in April, according to Nielsen. Uncle Matt’s leverages the benefits of orange juice and takes it up a notch by incorporating turmeric and probiotics to give consumers an even greater boost.

Talking Rain recently launched a soft drink enhanced with a range of immune-supporting ingredients, including zinc, calcium, magnesium, and  vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, A, and D. The product also contains coconut water as a natural source of electrolytes for improved hydration.

The ingredients in Shroom Shot are inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. The wellness shot incorporates turkey tail and lion’s mane mushrooms, which are expected to aid with digestion, clarity and improved function of the nervous system. It also includes turmeric, ginger, black pepper, pineapple juice, coconut water and kombucha for added benefits.

Mind Your Manna combines gut-friendly apple cider vinegar with a superfood base blend (turmeric, ginger, garlic, and more), citrus fruits, astragalus, and rose hips. The suggested benefits include increasing the body’s resiliency and defenses.

Nuun offers convenient capsules packed with vitamins, minerals and botanicals that turn into a flavorful beverage when added to 16 oz. of water. Active ingredients include electrolytes, turmeric, ginger, elderberry, echinacea, selenium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, D, and E.

Zen Living

In addition to physical wellness, consumers are prioritizing their mental health during this time. According to a Prosper Insights and Analytics survey, roughly 65% of consumers say they have been affected mentally and emotionally as a result of the pandemic. Therefore, demand for beverages that aid with stress relief and enhance mood are expected to grow significantly. Common ingredients in these products include adaptogens, CBD, and L-theanine.

Crunchy Hydration’s Calm SKU is suggested to promote a meditative state of mind. The product includes stress-reducing ingredients like L-theanine, chamomile, and vitamin D. The brand also has an Om SKU which has 15mg of CBD in addition to the ingredients in the Calm SKU.

Eboost Superfuel Beverage combines emotional wellness with a boost of energy. The supplement includes caffeine, 5-HTP (an amino acid that helps produce serotonin),  Huperzine-A (an alkaloid compound suggested to help with memory), and resveratrol (a polythenol) which help stabilize moods. It’s also enhanced with electrolytes and vitamins.

Taika also combines caffeine and stress-relieving ingredients in their line of functional coffees. Each SKU includes ashwagandha for calm, L-theanine for focus, lion’s mane for clarity, cordyceps for energy, and reishi for immunity. Suggested benefits include reduced anxiety and improved productivity.

The launch of YUNO BioTactical Drinks was made possible through crowdfunding app, Indigogo. The brand claims that their wellness shots will have immediate results and are also aimed at improving immunity. The Uplift SKU is infused with vanilla, peppermint, cardamom, cocoa, nutmeg, licorice and cloves as well as various superfoods.

Serene Sleep

Stress and changes in daily routines has made it more difficult to fall and/or stay asleep for many consumers. A survey of nearly 1,000 people by SleepHelp.org found that 22% of responders have had poorer quality sleep due to the pandemic. Beverages and supplements with sleep-inducing ingredients like melatonin, L-theanine, lavender, and magnesium are expected to grow.

Zero-proof spirit brand Kin Euphorics is helping consumers replace their night cap with a sleep-inducing botanical beverage. Active ingredients include L-theanine, L-tryptophan, L-serine, magnesium, melatonin and reishi mushroom. Other ingredients include fig juice, smoked salt and American oak, saffron, cinnamon, passionfruit, clove, bourbon vanilla, and chili pepper extracts.

Meda’s cherry-hibiscus flavored sleep drink is enhanced wtih 15mg of broad spectrum CBD. Other active ingredients include L-theanine to boost GABA levels, valerian root extract for calming effect, morello cherry as a natural source of melatonin, 5-HTP to increase melatonin production, and schisandra berry to help lower cortisol.

Vital Proteins is giving beauty sleep a whole new meaning with their snooze-inducing, blueberry-lavender flavored collagen shot. Each supplement includes 7mg of collagen peptides, 200mg of GABA, 60mg of hyaluronic acid, and 1mg of melatonin.
