Clear Protein Is Booming. Is Your Portfolio Keeping Up?

Search interest in “clear protein” has climbed over 200% in the past year, and monthly search volume now sits near 50,000.1 That kind of growth curve is hard to ignore. The concept itself isn’t new, brands like Premier were running clear protein RTDs nearly a decade ago, but this wave is bigger and broader: protein sodas, carbonated formats, and better ready-to-mix textures are pulling whey protein isolate into categories that barely existed five years ago.

From TikTok Upstart to Mainstream Category

This didn’t happen overnight. Seeq, a scrappy Minnesota startup, launched a clear whey protein powder in October 2021 and turned it into a viral moment almost entirely on TikTok. Isopure, an established sports nutrition brand, capitalized on the trend in August 2025 with the launch of Isopure Protein Water at Costco, part of what the company called its “Year of Clear.”

Then came 2026, when clear protein went even more mainstream. Protein2o brought the format to RTD with its P2X hydration line, launching nationally in Target stores in April. Nestlé Health Science’s Garden of Life announced its own Clear Whey Protein powder range on June 18, set to hit U.S. shelves in September. Optimum Nutrition’s Clear Whey Protein is on shelves now too. Five years from indie TikTok brand to major CPG portfolios: that’s the arc that should have your attention.

So here’s the provocative question for your next portfolio review: if clear protein isn’t on your roadmap yet, why not?

What’s Actually Holding Brands Back

Supply used to be the headline challenge. Whey protein isolate has tightened, and pricing has followed. But supply is only the entry point. Ask R&D teams working in this space and the harder problems show up downstream:

  • System sensitivity. These whey isolates are highly soluble on their own, but the surrounding system isn’t forgiving. Mineral and ion balance, pH, and processing conditions like pasteurization or hot-fill can each tip a formula toward haze, sedimentation, or gelling that never showed up on the bench.
  • Taste and mouthfeel. Astringent, drying, grassy, even barnyard-like off notes are the default, not the exception, with high-inclusion protein, not just chalkiness or powderiness. They’re magnified in a clear, refreshing format where there’s nowhere for the flavor to hide.
  • Sourcing the right isolate for the job. Not every WPI is built for clarity and low-pH stability. Matching protein source to format is now a formulation decision, not a procurement afterthought.

The Question Worth Asking Your Team

Clear protein has moved from novelty to expectation. The brands winning here aren’t the ones with the most protein on the label. They’re the ones who solved taste, stability, and clarity together instead of bolting a fix on at the end.

Have you run the numbers on clear protein for your portfolio? And if you’ve tried, what stopped you: supply, cost, or the taste problem nobody wants to admit is still unsolved?

We’d love to hear where you’re stuck. It’s exactly the kind of formulation challenge we’ve been working through, more on that soon.
