There's huge demand for protein-rich food and beverage products. Consumers want more grams of protein per serving, more options for protein sources, and protein on-the-go. The trend shows no signs of slowing down and the market is expected to reach $21.5 billion globally by 2025. Here are some products that showcase the next generation of protein.

RTD Innovation

Protein water isn’t a new concept, but the popularity of enhanced waters has renewed interest in the product. More brands are developing protein waters, and Nielsen reported that sales in the category increased 563% in the U.S. from 2015 to 2017.

New to the market is sparkling protein water. Fizzique is the first brand to launch a carbonated protein RTD, but expect to see more brands launch them in the future.

Nitrogen-infused protein shakes are a rarity, though the format lends itself to this type of beverage. Nitrogen-infusions create a creamy texture, elevate flavor, and emulate sweetness. The Nitro Coffee & Protein Shake made by Pure Raw Juice is one of the first on the market.

Café Inspired

Protein is found in a range of coffee products, such as cold brew, frappes, and lattes. Some brands have also been fortifying these coffee-based beverages with additional functional ingredients like probiotics and MCT oil to offer consumers more than just their traditional dose of caffeine.

Tea and protein products entered the market on the heels of the successful coffee and protein category. Iconic Protein has a matcha protein shake, and Isopure has a protein fortified green and black iced tea.

[mk_image src=”https://imbibeinc.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/protein-hot-chocolate.jpg” image_size=”full” el_class=”mnky_img”]

Hot chocolate is a relatively new offering that gives consumers another way to indulge and increase their protein intake. It’s offered by Bowmar Nutrition, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for brands launching protein-fortified hot chocolate during the cooler months.

Flap Jacked offers protein-fortified cookie, muffin and baking mix. These mixes are sold in multi-serve and single-serve packaging. The latter makes the product even more convenient and helps with portion control.
