There's huge demand for protein-rich food and beverage products. Consumers want more grams of protein per serving, more options for protein sources, and protein on-the-go. The trend shows no signs of slowing down and the market is expected to reach $21.5 billion globally by 2025. Here are some products that showcase the next generation of protein.

Protein water isn’t a new concept, but the popularity of enhanced waters has renewed interest in the product. More brands are developing protein waters, and Nielsen reported that sales in the category increased 563% in the U.S. from 2015 to 2017.

New to the market is sparkling protein water. Fizzique is the first brand to launch a carbonated protein RTD, but expect to see more brands launch them in the future.

Nitrogen-infused protein shakes are a rarity, though the format lends itself to this type of beverage. Nitrogen-infusions create a creamy texture, elevate flavor, and emulate sweetness. The Nitro Coffee & Protein Shake made by Pure Raw Juice is one of the first on the market.

Protein is found in a range of coffee products, such as cold brew, frappes, and lattes. Some brands have also been fortifying these coffee-based beverages with additional functional ingredients like probiotics and MCT oil to offer consumers more than just their traditional dose of caffeine.

Tea and protein products entered the market on the heels of the successful coffee and protein category. Iconic Protein has a matcha protein shake, and Isopure has a protein fortified green and black iced tea.

Hot chocolate is a relatively new offering that gives consumers another way to indulge and increase their protein intake. It’s offered by Bowmar Nutrition, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for brands launching protein-fortified hot chocolate during the cooler months.

Protein smoothies are incredibly popular, but newer launches include additional functional ingredients. Wildway smoothie bowls have egg white protein, MCT, probiotics, collagen peptides, and L-glutamine.

Collagen is a protein that is suggested to improve hair, skin, nail and joint health. Vital Proteins is one of several brands that combine collagen with whey for added value.

Moon Juice combines brown rice protein and adaptogens (which are suggested to reduce stress) like ashwagandha, reishi, and cordyceps for increased energy, focus, and recovery.

There are hundreds of protein-fortified ready-to-eat foods out there, but brands are now offering baking mixes that allow the consumer to DIY. Kodiak Cakes launched protein-packed flapjack and waffle mix, as well as other baking mixes.

Flap Jacked offers protein-fortified cookie, muffin and baking mix. These mixes are sold in multi-serve and single-serve packaging. The latter makes the product even more convenient and helps with portion control.

Many consumers trying to make healthier choices and limiting their bread intake, but protein-fortified bread mix gives the perception that the product is better for you.
